The Modern Monk

What does being modern means? Following all the newest trend of technology, dress up following the most up-to-date fashion, listening to the most recent music and watching movies etc.

What does all these means? Just changing according to the flow of the current world.

That means not dressing like this:

But this:

So, that's the approach used by a Chinese Bhuddist monk, Shi Daoxin, to reach out to people.

Talking about religion, the younger generation of today are not very interested or enthusiatic as compared to the older generation, since, most young people in affluent countries have everything that they want. There is no need to seek for help from God. Thus, reaching out to the younger generation can be tough.

The method used by the monk is through songs, by that it doesn't mean spiritual chanting and meditating songs, but songs that mimics chinese pop music - - however, the contents of the lyrics consist of Bhuddist teachings. His songs are played on Chinese national TV and radio, having received thousands of hits on the internet.

I would say this monk is very brave. Having vowed to be a monk and having lived most of his life in the temple, to venture out and do something like this is rather drastic. He might have to face with scorn and disapproval of his fellow monks, for defying the rules and regulations set by the temple. Once he venture out all alone, he need to find people to support his effort, which is not easy. But, I must say he did a good job!

Eventhough many people are criticizing him for being so modern - he wears a sunglass, listens to ipod while walking on the street and replies to email from fans, but he still continue with his work to reach to the younger generation without wavering. Anyway, what's wrong with wearing sunglasses and listening to ipod?? And people even criticised him of chasing fame! Can't people see the good cause behind all his doings? Why does he want to endure all these criticisms just to chase fame? He must have other stronger reasons to do what he is doing.

Daoxin will be releasing his 2nd album this year and money collected will be given to charity.

Thumbs up and all the best to Daoxin!

Snorkelling Experience in Sabah

The 5-day trip in Sabah was really very relaxing. It's all about natural beauty. Sun, sea, moutain, natural habitat for animals.....you name it. After 3 years of studying, finally a good time for me to relax.
It's a bit late to blog now about my snorkelling experience, because I was busy with preparation to start work - already started working for 3 days - - - ~tired~- - - But I still want to talk about it! :P
Throughout the 5 days there, the day to go to the islands was one that I wasn't looking forward to. Why?? Because I do not know how to swim!!
- - - ~ ashamed~- - - And the 2 friends with me are good swimmers! So, I was mentally prepared to be left alone on the beach, or just at the shallow part of the sea, playing water like kids.

We started out in the morning from Sutera Harbour Resort. We took the promotion of RM 75 which will include the snorkelling equipment - mask, fins and life jacket (most important for me - my life depends on it), 15 minutes of glass bottom boat ride and return trip for 2 islands - Manukan and Sapi!! Cheap eh?

Me and Lily on the boat to Manukan Island

The detailed prices and available activities can be found on the website linked to the title.

Once we arrived at Manukan island, we were captured by the beauty of the island! The fishes that swam happily almost everywhere!

Feeling happy and nervous at the same time - how am I suppose to snorkel? I can't even swim....... Even with the life jacket I still felt really scared.
Lily, with her fins and mask

Xiaoqi adjusting her mask and me feeling very nervous

Well, all thanks to my friend. She promised to hold on to my hand and never let go! So, we embark on our coral reefs searching journey. ~~God, protect me...~~ We were allowed to snorkel until where the red balls are, which was really far away, for me, maybe.

Once we reached half of the distance, I become so scared that I almost went back. But my friend encouraged me and told me if I don't go further, there will be nothing to see, and I will miss the opportunity to see the beautiful coral reefs. So, I swallow my saliva, gather whatever guts that are left in me and went on and on and on.....

I never regretted going on and on and on! Anyway, I was too slow and heavy for Xiaoqi to pull me along, so a really strong lifeguard came over to our rescue. He brought me around to the places with the most coral reefs and fishes! We saw the poisonous sea urchin - shivers... and Nemo! haha.....

The lifeguard also was really good at diving - dived to get more coral stones for us to see - starfishes, and some others which I do not know the names.
Our lifeguard, whom I held on to with all my strength :P

Anyway, the only thing I regretted was not having a waterproof camera to capture the beautiful scenes underwater.

So, snorkelling is feasible even if you do not know how to swim. But you got to have lots of guts, trust me!

Susan Boyle

Susan Boyle........

Watch it from youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY&feature=related

After watching her video on youtube, I learnt that judgement shoudn't be made by just seeing one's outward appearance.
She doesn't have a very good-looking face, but she looked very motherly and loving. Her inner beauty which can be seen from her taking care of her elderly mother until she passed away at the age of 91. Just for the sake of taking care of her mother, she gave up her singing. She attributed her courage to audition for Britain's Got Talent to her late mother.

Being in front of such a big audience in Britain's Got Talent might be quite nerve-wrecking for someone who hasn't had any experience of being in the spotlight. Her appearance on stage got many cynical expressions from the audience, as can be seen from the youtube video. Most of the people were laughing at her. People must be thinking how can such an old looking person, who outwardly really had no link whatsoever to the word 'talent' appear on stage? Does she really had something good to show us? Or is she one of those who just wants to appear on TV and will perform something of no quality? Even Simon, one of the judge, gave a cynical look when Susan said her age was 47. What's so wrong about being 47? Stop stereotyping against older people.

She totally changed the whole mindset of the people once she sang. Her voice filled the whole auditorium. The audience were suprised! Totally suprised by what a talent she has. That day, her name shot up to fame. She had been interviewed 60 times and her youtube video has been viewed 21 million times!!!
She even had an interview for the early morning show on CBS News. From her interview, she looks really overwhelmed by the fame she has gotten overnight. She doesn't even know how to react to questions asked, giving only short answers, standing rather stiffly in front of the camera. And her voice sounds similarly astounding even early in the morning!

Unluckiest Day Ever....

Having to deal with the stress of starting work in the cardiopulmonary department is already very exhausting....... Just the thought of it exhaust me to the core. Everyday seeing patients with heart and lung problems is going to be extremely tough, as compared to seeing patients with musculoskeletal problem or neurological problem. More precautions and contraindications. More of everything............ ~go away, thoughts~

As if God thinks that this isn't challenging enough for me and put me through another day of tests. These are the days when I do not want to get out of bed but was forced to, and when I get up, it feels like I got up from the wrong side of the bed.

As a foreigner in Singapore, I got to apply for an Employment Pass. So, here's my ordeal (in the form of a timetable):

8:00am: Go to hospital to get my forms and medical check up form

8:45am: Got into the MRT, travelled 2 stops away before realizing that the HR woman didn't
give me my employment pass form, only my PR form. WTF!

9:00am: Back at hospital to get my EP form.

9:10am: Inside hospital's lift to go to MRT station, when to my horror, my medical check-up form is EMPTY! WTF 2! Called the woman and she say 'souli' 100 times and ask me to go back.

9:15am: At the HR department again to get my medical check-up form from 'souli woman'.

10:30am: Reached the Ministry to do my EP. Got my number and waited for 20 minutes.

10:50am: My turn!! Finally.....! Well, spoken too soon, I guess. The nice counter lady told me that the doctor did not tick in the box indicating that I am 'normal', and instead cross out the whole section of 'abnormal'. So? So, I am not allowed to apply until the nice, old, balding doctor tick in the 'normal' boxes. WTF 3!!!!

11:00am: Returning back to the hospital, to see nice, old, balding doctor who doesn't know how to tick.

11:15am: Reached the counter, empty counter with no one. Waited impatiently for 10 minutes before another 'souli lady' came out.

11:25am: Explain my problem (or rather the doctor's problem) to 'souli lady'. She got another doctor to tick and sign for me, coz the other doctor has gone to learn how to tick.

11:35am: 'Souli lady' came out and return me my form, saying a thousand 'souli' until I say 'never mind' and smiled unwillingly.

12:20pm: Reach the Ministry AGAIN!! Took my 2nd number (should buy TOTO) and waited.

12:40pm: My turn. Hope nothing will screw up again.......OK, everything ok! But must wait for 3 hours before they give me my EP. WTF 4!!!

12:50 - 3pm: Had lunch, roam around in shopping mall - wasted damn lots of money, rot in Starbucks.

3:30pm: Finally, my EP is ready.............!!

What a long, long, unlucky day. My feet hurts, my body aches, I am totally exhausted!!
Well, the only positive thing that I can think of is - I had a good workout...!
